Last night’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Season 1 Episode 1 marked Bravo’s first foray into non-reality TV. That alone was enough to pique our interest.
Will interest wane, however, after the buzz of the premiere dies down? Or does the network have a hit on its hands with the Lisa Edelstein-led project?
Alternatively light-hearted and jarringly brutal, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce Season 1 Episode 1 introduced us to this series about a self-help guru.
And the demise of her marriage, and all that entails.
Edelstein plays Abby McCarthy, author of a book series that uses her own life as a case study of how to have a happy marriage, family, and all the good stuff.
Do as she says, not as she does in other words.
Abby and her husband, played by Paul Adelstein (yes, they amusingly cast an Adelstein alongside an Edelstein) are recently and awkwardly separated.
They are still living under the same roof, though, and trying to keep the whole marital collapse thing on the DL for the sake of their kids and her career.
Her friends Lyla (Janeane Garofalo) and Phoebe (Beau Garrett) are in the know, and have relationship issues of their own that they bring to the table.
If you watch Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce online, you’ll see a combination of laughing, drinking, dancing and sex, juxtaposed with the sadness of lives in turmoil.
Some parts are really fun to watch, others legitimately tough to watch. Perhaps that’s entirely by design, as plenty of people know this midlife reality well.
Therein lies the hook of Bravo’s first non-reality show, which may ironically be more true to life than some of the allegedly not scripted housewife dramas.
What happens when Abby’s kids find out? What does she admit at a book signing that gets caught on video and goes viral, sending her life in turmoil?
