Prince William was the best man at the wedding of his friend Thomas van Straubenzee over the weekend, but his wife Kate Middleton was a no-show.

The reason was obvious: Kate is due in a matter of weeks and did not want to risk going into labor early (a la Kim Kardashian) at such an occasion.

Prince Harry, as an usher, was there along with his girlfriend Cressida Bonas and Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton, so Kate not coming was notable.

Because the nuptials took place at Alnwick Castle, a 300-mile drive from where Kate and William live, she decided to take it easy. Probably smart.

Kate Middleton was really upset that she couldn’t make it, but she didn’t want to take any chances.

Looks like she made the right call, as there’s no baby yet.

Once he or she does arrive, the framed birth announcement will be placed on an easel at the gates of Buckingham Palace … they’ll also Tweet the news.

According to a Kensington Palace spokesperson:

“While it is a deeply personal and private event, the Duke and Duchess realize this is a time of national celebration and that there will be vast interest in the baby.”

“They realize many people will want to share in their happiness.”

July 11 and the new royal heir(ess) cannot come fast enough.
