You know what they say about all good things, don't you?
As it turns out, this saying also applies to all good television shows.
Because we've just learned that This Is Us is coming to an end.
While NBC itself has not yet confirmed this development, The Hollywood Reporter stated as much on Wednesday, writing:
"The network is poised to announce on Friday that its time-jumping family tear-jerker from creator Dan Fogelman will close its run during the upcoming 2021-22 broadcast season."
Representatives for NBC and studio 20th Television declined comment for the article, meaning we'll need to wait until the network unveils its fall schedule this Friday to learn the show's fate for certain
But this is The Hollywood Reporter we're talking about here.
(Not to mention the fact that TV Line and Variety have also confirmed the planned conclusion.)
This isn't being speculated upon by some random celebrity gossip site, you know? The source is legitimate.
Back in 2019, This Is Us was renewed for Seasons 4, 5 and 6 all at once, although there was no word back then about the series wrapping up after Season 6.
Fogelman, for his part, has been very open about the program's potential lifespan, even stating in 2019 that the Season 3 finale should be viewed as the show’s “midpoint.”
He has also long claimed he had the series finale planned out, even revealing all the way back in 2018 that a few scenes from the series finale had already been filmed.
"We have a story to tell and we want to do this the right way," he said on an FYC panel for the show.
In April 2019, the creator said the following to The Hollywood Reporter:
“We never set out to make a television series that was going to last 18 seasons, so we have a very direct plan. I have script pages I have written and I’m writing that really are deep, deep, deep into the future.
"We have a plan for what we’re going to do, and I know what the plan is."
An episode count for the final season has not been set, but look for rit to consist of approximately 18 installments.
If it hits that mark, the show will surpass the 100-episode milestone overall, which is a crucial number in terms of syndication.
Season 5, which is currently airing on Tuesday nights, will cover 16 episodes.
The finale will air on Tuesday, May 25 in a special 10/9c time slot -- and it will find the Pearson family gathering for Kevin and Madison’s much-anticipated wedding.
This Is Us has been an enormous hit for NBC right from the very first episode.
It chronicles the Pearson family across multiple decades of their lives and it stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley in the key roles.
Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan, Jon Huertas, Hannah Zeile, Niles Fitch, Logan Shroyer, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, Parker Bates, Lonnie Chavis, Faithe Herman, Eris Baker, Lyric Ross, Asante Blackk and Griffin Dunne also star in the series.
As for how This Is Us will bow out?
Viewers already know that, in about 10 years, the Pearsons gather at Kevin's home to visit with Rebecca ... who appears to be very ill.
We've spent the last two seasons slowly learning how the family gets to this tragic point, as Rebecca deals with the early stages of Alzheimer's and Kevin begins building his family and getting acquainted with his uncle Nicky.
It's safe to assume the final season will take us all the way to that future get-together.
