Fox has not enjoyed a very strong premiere week.

Scream Queens tanked in the ratings on Tuesday night. Minority Report REALLY tanked in the ratings on Monday night. So, did Rosewood Season 1 Episode 1 reverse this trend on Wednesday night?

In an unfortunate, albeit definitive word? No.

This is through no fault of Morris Chestnut. The veteran actor possesses the talent and charisma to lead a series. We just wish that series were not Rosewood.

Let’s start with the tired concept: Dr. Beaumont Rosewood is the “Beethoven of private pathologists,” someone teeming with swagger and style.

What, exactly, is a private pathologist? We’re told over and over and over on the premiere.

He’s someone who helps a medical examiner in a city like Miami, where the body count can grow awfully high. But although Rosewood is good at his job, he’s not very popular around the precinct due to his attitude.

(Sound like any other doctor who previously a much better show on Fox?)

The opening episode teams Rosewood up with Detective Annalise Villa (Jaina Lee Ortiz), a Miami native who has returned from a stint in New York City.

You won’t believe this, but the two don’t get along at first. It takes Villa awhile to realize that Rosewood is worth putting up with due to his intelligence.

If this all sounds very familiar (mismatched partners solve crimes together; one is tough, the other is smart and stubborn)… that’s because it is.

But the twist here is that Rosewood has a congenital heart defect and has maybe a decade to live. Hence his fixation on work, despite clearly having feelings for his partner.

Rosewood is not a bad show. It’s just boring and trite and hard to take seriously.

But perhaps it’s the ideal, breezy introduction for those who need something light before delving into the awesome intensity of Empire Season 2 an hour later.
