The highly-anticipated Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul doesn’t premiere on AMC until February 8, but the first reviews are already rolling in, and to describe them as "glowing" would be to make a massive understatement.
Before we get to the raves, here’s the full-length Better Call Saul trailer to give you an idea of what’s in store:
Yes, this prequel takes place so long before the days of Heisenberg that Saul hasn’t even adopted his nom de sleazebag yet, and he’s still just lowly old Jimmy McGill.
So far, the critics seem to agree that taking the story way back was the first in a long line of smart decisions from BCS’s crack team of writers:
"The first few episodes that I saw are better than Breaking Bad. They are smarter. They are sharper. I have never seen a prequel handled so cleverly." – Stephen Marche, Esquire
"Right in line with the tone and style of the original, now classic series…Breaking Bad fans are home." – Hank Stuever, The Washington Post
"Everything you could possibly want from a spinoff of [Breaking Bad]…Hands down, it’s one of the best midseason premieres we’ve seen so far." – Kristen Acuna, Business Insider
Obviously, a lot of critics have yet to sound off the virtually-guaranteed hit, but if the early reviews are any indication, Saul may be your go-to guy for winter dramedy.
Of course, if you’re already fiending and can’t wait two more weeks for your Vince Gilligan fix, you can always watch Breaking Bad online at TV Fanatic. Tell ’em Saul sent you…and don’t forget to tread lightly:
