Rapper Beanie Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, is in critical condition following a shooting outside a New Jersey residence last week, according to reports.
He had just returned from dropping his kids off at school, but was not the intended target of the attack, authorities told the media following the shooting.
“Apparently, there was a struggle of some type, which led to Mr. Grant being shot and that is all we have at this point,” Pleasantville Police Chief Jose Ruiz said.
Sigel was listed in critical condition, but was awake following surgery that same day.
The rapper achieved considerable success since making his debut in 2000 with The Truth, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard charts that year.
He was also once a high profile member of Jay Z’s Roc-a-Fella’s label of artists.
But despite his success and promising future, personal and legal problems – including a 2006 shooting during an attempted robbery – caused major setbacks.
More recently, he had just served two years in prison for tax evasion and had been living in a halfway house following his release this past August.
He was set to perform December 18 at a concert titled “Beanie Sigel: The Return” at Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts. His status is unclear.
We wish him a quick and full recovery.
