South Park has delved into the world of consoles and video games on plenty of occasions.
However, South Park Season 18 Episode 6 put a different twist on this general storyline by focusing on “freemium” games, along with the concept of addiction.
Unfamiliar with freemium? You aren’t alone, as the episode took awhile to get going because the Minister of Mobile Gaming kept explaining to Terrance and Phillip just how these games work.
Stan, meanwhile, became addicted to the freemium app created by these two, as Randy lectured Stan and Stan’s grandfather on the dangers of addiction.
These scenes provided us with Randy’s beer and wine tasting (“I’m having six. It’s called a tasting, and it’s classy!”) and some more Lorde references.
As for episode highlights and the best South Park quotes from an uneven half hour?
- Toward the end, Stan summoned Satan, who, in awesomely casual fashion, explained how dopamine affected the human body to him. (“It’s not f-cking rocket science, this stuff.”)
- The Minister of Mobile Gaming revealed himself to be the Canadian Devil. Who, naturally, was named “Beelzeboot.”
- As a random aside, the show’s take on an alcoholic beverage commercial this week was a winner. (“More tuxedos, more cars, more pussy, drink drink drink!”)
- Soon Canada will be advanced as Michigan!
Overall, the exposition on freemium caused this episode to drag. But it picked up momentum when Satan arrived to help Stan and later did battle with the Canadian Devil. How can you ever go wrong when that happens?
