We veered away from the norm on Criminal Minds Season 10 Episode 3.

The unique hour opened on a packed plane, as passengers complained about the usual First World issues, such as a lack of WiFi or a spreadsheet that just wouldn’t work.

But then the plane suddenly went into free fall and the banal problems of everyday life didn’t seem so pressing.

Forget just trying to figure out who was responsible for 151 passengers being killed on Transatlantic Flight 420; the BAU was also called in to figure out how and why.

Was it a dishonorably discharged Army missile operator? No, he quickly gets ruled out.

Because turbulence would cause the passengers to vomit, Reid explains that having the wing slats activated both cause this issue and would impair the integrity of the plane’s fuselage, eventually causing it to break apart.

The team determines that someone had to have been controlling the plane remotely, setting up a profile of an Unsub (e.g. he would have a God complex) in the process.

What about Hayman Vasher? Someone with whom a passenger had gone on a blind date many years before, who works as an aerospace engineer and who sent a text that reads “I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds” three days before the crash?

Pretty good candidate, no?

The BAU concludes that Vasher probably crashed this plane as a test run before his real mission: slamming another one down in a crowded area. The BAU therefore orders all planes grounded until they find the culprit.

But the communication system is down on Flight IA61, which is on the way toward a football stadium. Morgan, Hotch and Kate enter Vasher’s cabin and Hotch shoots him in the head before he can cause any more damage. The plane lands safely.

Quite the intense and scary episode, huh?

We learned a bit more about Callahan during it, such as how she hates to be seen as helpless an that she’s looking after her late sister and brother-in-law’s daughter, who is now 13 years old.
