While the TV world is still recovering from the shocking death of Will Gardner on The Good Wife Season 5 Episode 15, Josh Charles is making the rounds to discuss his character's surprising exit.
He sat down with David Letterman last night and shared that this has been over a year in the making and has been a difficult secret to keep.
"[The Good Wife has] been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career," Charles said, "but at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was just ready to kind of move on."
Charles revealed that a few close family members knew the secret, but that was it. His neighbors reacted to the death in a surprising way.
"When I went out to -- I went downstairs, and I saw by our mailbox, the neighbors across the street, who I don't even know, had left my wife and I a really beautiful note just saying that we feel like a family member had died and we know this is just a TV show and all that. But it was, I have to say, I was very touched by it."
That's...kind of sweet.
Show creators also spoke out about the death in a note shared on the show's Facebook page. In it they wrote:
"We, like you, mourn the loss of Will Gardner. And while Will is gone, our beloved Josh Charles is very much alive and remains an integral part of our family."
"The Good Wife, at its heart, is the 'Education of Alicia Florrick.' To us, there always was a tragedy at the center of Will and Alicia's relationship: the tragedy of bad timing."
There isn't a better word to describe fan reaction to the exit and "shocked" doesn't quite go far enough to cover it. But shocked is perhaps the best word we have.
While on Letterman's couch, Charles addressed his fans directly thanking them for their support.
