Mary J. Blige is both in Shape and still in mourning.

The 42-year old Grammy winner covers the latest issue of this magazine, showing off an impressively flat stomach and saying she remains inspired by the tragic death of Whitney Houston.

Saying that event “really crushed her,” Blige expounds on how it changed her life.

“I haven’t had a drink in a year and three months,” according to the artist. “I had quit for a long time but started again about five years ago. I’m off it completely once more, and now I feel stronger than ever.”

How did Houston’s drug overdose alter Blige’s focus on a daily basis?

“I saw someone so incredibly talented just diminish, and I refuse to go out like that,” she tells the publication.

Blige also gives credit to working out and to following gluten-free recipes that typically include dairy-free and low-carb products.

”When I’m fit, I can conquer the world,” Blige says. “I love the way I look and feel right now and am truly comfortable in my own skin.”

It’s too bad Whitney never came to the same realization, but it’s inspiring to know that it’s never too late for one to turn one’s life around. Way to go, Mary!
