Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have broken up, the singer confirms.
The split follows weeks, if not months of rumors that the relationship was on shaky ground, and the same day as she confirmed quitting The X Factor.
“Britney Spears and Jason Trawick have mutually agreed to end their one-year engagement,” her rep, Jeff Raymond, told People this evening.
“As two mature adults, [Britney and Jason] came to the difficult decision to go their separate ways while continuing to remain friends,” Raymond added.
Spears and Trawick confirmed their breakup in a statement as well.
“Jason and I have decided to call off our engagement,” the 31-year-old says in the statement. “I’ll always adore him and we will remain great friends.”
Adds Jason Trawick, her former agent: “As this chapter ends for us a new one begins. I love and cherish her and her boys and we will be close forever.”
The split has been a long time coming, but both Trawick and Spears wanted to wait to make an announcement until his conservatorship was disbanded.
Earlier today, we reported that the star was on the verge of dumping him as conservator – a position he was appointed to in 2012 – if nothing else.
The former X Factor judge, mother to sons Preston, 7, and Jayden, 6, began dating Trawick in 2009. She accepted his proposal two years later, in December 2011.
The pop icon has been married twice before, first to childhood friend Jason Alexander and then to Kevin Federline, the father of her two boys.
It all seemed to be going so well with Jason Trawick, but that too fell apart. We wish them both the best in what is sure to be a very difficult time.
