Missy Franklin is a lot more than a new Olympic champion. She’s a mature, grounded, very impressive 17-year old.
The Centennial, Colorado native captured her first Gold Medal yesterday, besting the field in the 100-Meter Backstroke. She then told reporters that each time she hit the pool in London, her thoughts were with the victims of the massacre in Aurora.
“Every single race I’m going to have that Colorado incident back on my mind,” Missy said. “It’s such a terrible thing and I’m so shaken by it. They’re in my thoughts this entire process.”
Neither Franklin nor her parents knew any of the victims James Holmes allegedly shot on the morning of July 20, but…
“Aurora and Colorado in general is such a close state that when something like that happens we’re all affected by it, no matter who it is. It’s hitting very close to home,” she said.
