Plaxico Burress Gets Two Years in Prison

by at .

In Super Bowl XLII, New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress caught the game-winning touchdown as his team knocked off the undefeated New England Patriots in one of the greatest games and biggest shockers in sports history.

Even less predictable? Burress shooting himself at a nightclub less than a year later, getting a two-year prison sentence, and potentially playing "receiver" in New York's Fishkill Correctional Facility, if you know what we mean.

If you don't know what we mean, please don't ask.

Plaxico Burress, 32, is headed there tomorrow after pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon in August and being officially sentenced Tuesday.

This is actually more or less old news, as Burress was staring at this for months. The football and celebrity news worlds have moved on, as have Giants fans.

How about that Mario Manningham and Steve Smith Sunday? Wow!

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Or thigh, as it were.

Given New York's tough gun laws, it could have been worse - Plax's plea was to a a single charge of gun possession, which enabled him to avoid two more counts of criminal possession and one count of reckless endangerment.

Had he been convicted of the more serious charges, he could have faced a prison term of three and a half to 15 years. Don't pack heat at the club, kids at home.

The charges stem from an incident at a New York nightclub in November 2008, when Burress accidentally shot himself in the thigh with an unlicensed weapon.

Burress, who will be transferred from New York's Rikers Island, intends to resume his football career after he completes his sentence, his lawyer has indicated.

Hey, Michael Vick is active this Sunday for the Eagles. There's hope.
