Brazilian police now say boxer Arturo Gatti hanged himself with a bag strap that he tied around a wooden staircase column seven feet off the ground.
Milena Saraiva, a spokeswoman for police in the northeastern city of Recife, says police first thought Gatti was strangled by wife Amanda Rodrigues.
They were led to believe this because his body was found on the floor.
Amanda Carine Barbosa Rodrigues was arrested but will not be charged.
An autopsy report indicated Gatti was suspended off the ground for three hours early July 11, however. An analysis found marks on the staircase column.
Arturo Gatti was found several hours later by his 23-year-old Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, who had been held in custody but was freed yesterday.
Police officially ruled the former welterweight champion's death a suicide.
