It was a long, arduous legal battle, but Madonna has finally won the legal right to adopt a daughter from Malawi.

Preparation and paperwork have begun that will male Chifundo “Mercy” James, 3, the official child of the iconic singer.

“It’s the early hours in New York now but my client has been awake all night waiting for this,” Madonna’s Malawi lawyer, Alan Chinula, said to People. “She was ecstatic when I broke the news to her. She said, ‘Thank heavens.'”
