After her over-the-top version of “Carry on Wayward Son” last week, Amanda Overmyer was the most likely female to be voted off American Idol this week.

But then she toned down her hair ‘do (see below), belted out a more subdued version of “I Hate Myself For Loving You” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and was told by Simon Cowell that it was one of his “favorite performances of the entire competition.”

In all, no contestant was universally panned by the judges last night. Though we’re guessing Kady Malloy wasn’t thrilled that Simon said she had no personality.

Here are a couple other performances that stood out:

  • We need to mention the audition of Carly Smithson – who sang “I Drove All Night” – if only to point out Paula Abdul’s lame Randy Jackson impression when she told the Irish singer: “So, dude. Dude, let me tell you something. You are like a dependable dog.” Who was in charge of Paula’s meds last night?
  • Love was a Battlefield for Brooke White – and another acoustic performance was a battle she came out on top of last night. This crooner always remains true to who she is, as Simon raved: “I thought it worked, purely because it didn’t have the band with you. Two weeks running, you’ve done a great performance.”
