Prince may have died of a drug overdose.

While this has been a subject of the rumor mill ever since the singer passed away on April 21, authorities have now confirmed that they are also considering the possibility.

A law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press on Thursday that investigators are looking into whether or not a doctor was over-prescribing drugs to the artist over the past several weeks

They are also wondering whether or not a doctor was actually a passenger on the plane that made an emergency landing on April 15 with Prince on board.

As previously reported, Prince was rushed to the hospital on the middle of that night.

Some say it was for an overdose on Percocet.

He refused to stay for more than a few hours and even made a few concert appearances in the days that followed, prior to his stunning death.

Was it really so stunning to those close to him, however?

A new report claims prescription painkillers were found near Prince at his home in Minnesota where he passed away.

Those who knew him well were “very concerned for his health and indicated he’d been undergoing treatments, which made his immune system weak," an insider told People last week.

Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud of the Carver County Sheriff’s Department, meanwhile, wouldn’t specifically comment on the direction investigators are taking.

But he did tell E! News the following:

"We’re continuing to investigate the circumstances of Prince’s death. The ME will provide toxicology results with her findings. I expect it to be a few weeks before we have her report(s)."

So we may be left with speculation over the Prince cause of death of a long time still.

Prince was found unresponsive insider an elevator in his home last Thursday.

During a press conference with authorities soon after the tragic incident, Sheriff Jim Olson went into a few details of the initial response to the 911 call.

He said that fire, rescue and ambulance responded to the emergency and discovered the singer’s body in his Paisley Park mansion.

He was announced dead approximately 30 minutes later.

And the world continues to mourn this giant, unexpected loss.
