Miss America Nina Davuluri was recently interrupted during a Q&A session at a Pennsylvania high school with a prom invite from senior Patrick Farve.
Presenting her with a flower and a very public invitation to his senior prom, Patrick earned smiles from Nina and a roar from classmates in the auditorium.
The administration was furious with Farve's stunt, however.
When Patrick decided to make his "promposal" to Miss America in front of his entire high school, getting suspended was the furthest thing from his mind.
Like any teen, he saw it as harmless and comical. School officials heard about it in advance and warned him not to go through with the stunt, however.
Patrick was suspended as a result of proceeding as planned.
The district released a statement noting that he is suspended not for the mere act of asking Nina Davuluri out, but for going against authority’s orders:
“It is not our practice to discipline a student for asking someone - even Miss America - to a school dance,” administrators said, explaining their decision.
“However, it is our practice to set expectations for student behavior, to communicate those expectations and to ensure those rules are followed within our schools.”
Nina, for her part, responded with laughter before continuing her Q&A session. She later released her own statement expressing her support for Patrick:
“Yesterday, a student invited me to prom and gave me a flower while I was giving a presentation in York, Pennsylvania. I was flattered by the gesture."
"Although I am unfortunately unable to attend due to my schedule, I learned of the disciplinary action taken and reached out to the school in hopes that they will reconside."
"Meeting and interacting with students across the country has been an important and rewarding part of my year as Miss America," she added.
"I always encourage students to follow their dreams through education, and I’m inspired daily by the enthusiasm and aspirations of the bright young adults I have the pleasure of meeting.”
