Military Moms Breastfeeding in Uniform: National Pride or Over the Line?

by at . Comments

National pride? Disgrace? Somewhere in the middle?

A photo of two servicewomen breastfeeding their children while in uniform has gone viral and added a new layer to the ongoing debate over nursing in public.

It's probably safe to say the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover went over quite well with Mom2Mom, a breastfeeding support group for military mothers.

In a series of tasteful professional photos showing beaming moms nursing kids, one jumps out for obvious reasons: the photo of two servicewomen below ...

Military Moms Breastfeeding

"A lot of people are saying it's a disgrace to the uniform. They're comparing it to urinating and defecating [while in uniform]," says Crystal Scott, a military spouse living at Fairchild AFB outside Spokane, Wash., who started Mom2Mom in January.

"It's extremely upsetting. Defecating in public is illegal. Breastfeeding is not."

It was Scott's idea to ask photographer Brynja Sigurdardottir to take the photos and create posters for National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August.

One of the moms photographed in uniform, Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, breastfeeds her 10-month-old twin girls on her lunch breaks during drill weekends.

"I have breast-fed in our lobby, in my car, in the park ... and I pump, usually in the locker room," says the proud member of the Air National Guard."

"I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breastfeeding. I hope [the photo] encourages other women to know they can, whether they're active duty, guard or civilian."

She said she's surprised by the reaction to the photos, which also feature her friend Christina Luna, because it never occurred to her it would cause a stir.

"There isn't a policy saying we can or cannot breastfeed in uniform," Echegoyen-McCabe says. "I think we do need to be able to breastfeed in uniform and be protected."

What do you think? Should they be allowed to?

Wow,it amazes me how ignorant people is especially women. You can expect idiotic stuff to come from a man but a woman, c 'on. I was in in army when my son was born n I too did breasfeed my son while in uniform, it's not like they're having sex in public, it's not illegal and all of you high and mighty have never done it you're just not admitting it but you're got the nerve to be selfritetious

There's nothing wrong with the photos. What these women are doing is a wholesome, natural act. Are we Americans so shallow we confuse everything with sexuality? Crystal needs to file suit against her ex-employer and enjoy the proceeds of her win, because she will.

I think there is nothing wrong with this photo!! All I see is 2 hard working women dressed for work, feeding their children. It shows that any woman with any job has the right to breastfeed their child when that child is hungry! After all, that's what breast are for!!!

Don't know why this makes me think of Welfare moms. With the John Edwards thing and homeless people being eatin by Zombies and now this:
Makes me think, thank god my S.S. pension which is taxed is going to good use! People tend to forget we're paying for this nonsense! Thank God I have one foot in the grave, the world I knew, gone! I feel sorry for my children and grand children. No more honesty, integrity, morals, decency and respect. Military can't even up hold it!

I'm a mom of 4. I know all about breast feeding. That's not my complaint. I had a government job. I've seen people get fired, written up..... for breaking the rules! The Military is supposed to be strict and up hold their standards. That uniform represents our country. The Commander did not punish them according to their rules and violations. The message I am getting is, we are weak, we break rules! If they have time to pose and fuss about breast feeding, they should take a leave, take care of their families first, which seems to be what they are worried about. What if the base gets bombed and the commander needs them for immediate response? Do they drop their babies? Tell him to wait, they're bonding? My Marine dad would be laughing at this, what a joke the Military is anymore. Oh and one more thing, will these women ever go overseas? Do women get drafted?
With all them men around, no wonder they get knocked up, how about birth control in the Military!

The natural function of breasts are to breast feed. I mean, that's what they're for. Many women can't breast feed for various reasons, and that's okay, but breast feeding isn't pervy or gross, and it doesn't take away from job performance. These women probably pump milk when they are at work. It takes about the same time as a smoke break or a trip to the bathroom. These women are simply showing by wearing their uniforms that all sort of women breast feed.

The update is these women totally violated the rules by posing in uniforms for advertising purposes. They are not going to be punished. That is messed up! All I can say is print the article out. When the military says you have violated a rule and want to punish you, throw that article in their faces! You can't let one person get away with violating the rules and not another. The Commander also commented they are allowed to breast feed, this was to bring awareness to it. My brother has been in the Military for years! Sorry Bro, it's turning into a joke.

It is a PRIVATE bonding experience between mother and child. NOT an experience with mother, child and photographer. Just use a light blanket or another form of coverup then you can feed and bond and it will be completely private. Everyone is happy. Come on now a little modesty is not a bad thing, in my mind it is the right thing.
