Fifty Shades of Grey Banned in Growing Number of Libraries

by at . Comments

Fifty Shades of Grey, the popular trilogy by EL James, may be topping bestseller lists, but you won't necessarily be able to find it at your local library.

Libraries in a few states are choosing not to stock the books or pulling them from shelves, with many citing what they say is inappropriate content.

The libraries that have decided against stocking the books due to their explicit sexual content so far are located in Georgia, Florida, and Wisconsin.

Some libraries that are not stocking the book cite financial reasons or bad reviews for the trilogy. Yeah right. A Random House spokesperson said:

"Random House fervently opposes literary censorship and supports the First Amendment rights of readers to make their own reading choices."

The book, in case you don't know, is about a hot, rich guy and beautiful, young sex plaything/slave and their various, detailed physical exploits.

Its movie rights were recently optioned, with fan speculation already reaching a fever pitch over who should play Christian and Anastasia.

Sexually provocative or not, a book is still a book, Random House says.

"We believe the Brevard County Public Library System [in Florida] is indulging in an act of censorship," the spokesman says, calling out one library ban in particular.

"Essentially this is saying to library patrons: we will judge what you can read."

"These events resonate as unfortunately considered decisions, as they withdraw from circulation a book with one of the highest demand curves in recent history."

THG's TAKE: C'mon, just lighten up and give the people what they want ... that being mind-numbingly cheesy, Twilight fan fiction-inspired softcore erotica.

Zooey Deschanel is too smart to come within 10 yards of that shit-pie!!!! You will have to settle for some doe-eyed, brain-dead, vain actress. They need to rename it from "mommy porn" to "frigid women porn". If you dont know why read Nancy Fridays My Secret Garden where different types of sexual fantasies are dissected and the psychology behind them explained.

I have read worst things from news sources and watched in horror far worst things on television. If they ban these books, they should also ban the Viagra and Ciales Erectile Dysfunction commercials from TV.

@50 shades of waiting. I am sorry you didn't get your request, that certainly was the wrong way for them to handle it. My public library didn't even order it, yet they are painted with the same brush by RH and I just don't see it as censorship when one chooses not to buy something.
I am more angry over the publishing houses denying my library the right to purchase e-books. There are tons of titles I would love to read through my library on my e-reader but these companies are restricting the titles from libraries. Where is the public out cry there?

@Merri - Brevard County DID buy the book... and then pulled it. I was on the waiting list forever and just before I got to the top, BANHAMMER.

You can't withdraw what was never there and the choice to buy a book is not the same as taking away one that had already been in circulation. They decided not to BUY the book. In an age where funding for public libraries is being slashed quicker than you can turn a page and many are forced to cut hours, staff or even close their doors,it's not just THIS book that won't make it on many library shelves.
Is Random House in a tither over that?

Oh well, all these folks banning the book makes even more popular! I had only heard bits and pieces til last week & news of the bans came out...that piqued my interest...read it in a few days, loved it, ordered the next 2....it's not for everyone but I found it " interesting"...;)

Omg its a book noone is forced to read it..I believe there is worse out there.Honestly I loved the book and cant wait to read the next one...You know what you have to be a certain age to rent certain movies they can do that with this book.....

Chill out people...CENSORSHIP is what happens when the GOVERNMENT does this. If the libraries banning the books are privately-owned, then get over it. No one can tell Books-a-Million which books to sell for the same reason.
If the libraries are owned or funded by the Federal government, then one might have a case.
