Critics often say that wrestling is fake.
But WWE Superstar Roman Reigns is now locked in a real-life battle for survival.
The veteran grappler opened Monday Night RAW this week by stepping inside the ring and telling fans he has been diagnosed with Leukemia.
As a result, he will need to take a hiatus from the company and will also need to give up the Universal Championship he worked so many years to obtain.
It is the highest honor within professional wrestling.
"When I was 22 years old, I was diagnosed with this," Reigns told a stunned audience, adding:
And very quickly I was able to put it in remission. But I'm not going to lie, that was the hardest time in my life. I didn't have a job, I didn't have any money, I didn't have a home and I had a baby on the way...
"I’m not going to lie, I’ll take every prayer you can send my way but I’m not looking for sympathy, I’m not looking for you to feel bad for me because I have faith."
Reigns went on to thank the WWE for giving him a chance and said:
"I want to make one thing clear -- by no means is this a retirement speech. I will beat this and I will be back, so you will see me very very soon."
In response to this stunning announcement, WWE legends past and present paid tribute to Reigns on social media.
"You have given us your everything including a courageously vulnerable moment. We, your WWE family, give you all of our love and support," John Cena tweeted.
Added Mick Foley:
"I’m just learning now of @WWERomanReigns leukemia diagnosis. Stunned. I liked and respected him from the moment I met him. Sending my very best wishes and prayers for you, Joe."
WWE also sent out a video of other wrestlers offering hugs and words of encouragement for Reigns after his speech.

We wish him the best.
