In what we promise will be the last Grammy-related post of the day, below is a transcript of the Mayer/Seacrest interview from the pre-show red carpet.
You know, the one where Mayer speaks in Japanese and, oh yeah, possibly outs the not-very-well-closeted Ryan Seacrest?
Yep, that’s right, apparently in addition to mocking Seacrest with his superior linguistic abilities, Mayer also managed to start things off by unleashing the Best Opening Remark Of All Time.
Remember that oft-quoted scene from Jerry Maguire where Renee Zellweger tells Tom Cruise, “you had me at hello?”
Well, Mayer ‘had us’ from the moment he enthusiastically greeted Seacrest with, “You’re the Anderson Cooper of E!”

Mayer: ???You???re like the Anderson Cooper of E!???
[Yada, yada, yada…lots of boring crap about Grammy nominations]
Seacrest: I have to ask you—
Mayer: [interrupts] No you don’t.
Seacrest: Yes I do—
Mayer: —but whatever. No you don’t “have to,” say you “want to” ask me. Be a man, be a man!
Seacrest: ???I want to ask you about Jessica Simpson. I want to ask if the two of you are dating? And, if so, when will we officially see you out together????
Mayer: [Speaks in Japanese]
Seacrest: I think that’s fantastic. And I’m happy for you.
Mayer: Take it to the room. Find a Japanese person and decode it. Subtitle it. And then you???ll have your answer.
Seacrest: Are you happy?
Mayer: I’m very happy…with what I just did to you.
Seacrest: Yeah, exactly. Thanks, buddy. [Mayer leaves] Good to see you Johnny, take care, have fun! Bye!

what a smartass. i just can’t see Jessica getting his jokes. The most basic things go over her head and with Mayer, you usually need to be on your game to get his sense of humor. Not in this particular instance but usually.

Seriously people find a sense of humor! He wants to keep his private life private, and in my opinion he did it in the best way possible, by making a joke of it. That’s just his personality. If you can’t appreciate that about him then don’t read things about him on the internet!
