Robin Roberts is leaving Good Morning America after Thursday’s show, a day earlier than planned so that she can fly home to visit her ailing mother in Mississippi.
Roberts said earlier this morning, “I’m having to move up my schedule.”
The 51-year-old newscaster will join other family members for a visit with their mother Lucimarian Roberts, who has been in frail health in recent months.
Next week Robin will be admitted to a cancer treatment center to begin preparations for a bone-marrow transplant. Her sister Sally-Ann Roberts turned out to be the closest match and will serve as her donor.
Five years ago Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer and it turns out her current condition was triggered by the drugs she took to battle the disease, “It’s rare to have MDS and mine was because of complications from the breast cancer treatment.”
She promises to return to GMA, “I am very blessed. Forty percent of Americans can’t even take a sick day, and here I know that I’m going to have a job when I come back.”
