Former Friends star Matthew Perry has struggled over the years with substance abuse and is headed back to rehab as a precautionary measure. He released a somewhat tongue-in-cheek statement to clarify his decision.

“I am making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web.”

Sources close to the situation say that Matthew, 41, has not relapsed but has chosen a third rehab stint as a “proactive” measure.

He previously spent time in treatment facilities in 1997 and 2001 for addiction to prescription pills.

Perry is currently wearing multiple hats as the co-creator, executive producer and star of the ABC sitcom Mr. Sunshine. It premiered as a mid-season replacement in February, 2011. His boss is played by Allison Janney.
