Matt Lauer was tapped to emcee an event the other night honoring Bloomberg Media Group CEO Andrew Lack and he used the opportunity to crack wise about his tarnished image.

He told the crowd, “I was a bit surprised to be asked to host this dinner. If you’ve been following the papers lately, you know it’s been a bit rough for me. These days, I only get asked to host dinners if polio is busy. Yup, I have a lower Q rating than polio right now.”

Lauer later introduced Katie Couric, his former morning show co-host. “Katie has a way of making headlines. Who can forget when she was co-host of the TODAY show? She got a colonoscopy on TV. Not to be outdone, two weeks ago, I got one in The New York Times.”

The television journalist introduced the man of the hour by saying, “Lack is my oldest friend. It’s not because we’ve been close for a long time. He literally is the oldest person I know.”

Yucking it up for the benefit of their colleague were fellow NBC pals Brian Williams and Barbara Walters.

The 55-year-old wed Dutch model Annette Roque in 1998 and the union was rocked in 2006 when she filed a divorce action that was later dropped. Their children are Jack, 11, Romy, 9 and Thijs, 6.
