Lamar Odom has checked himself into an undisclosed drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. According to a report by PEOPLE magazine, “He realized he needs help.”
Odom was rumored to be spiraling out of control when he was arrested last week and charged with DUI. His license was suspended after he refused to submit to a chemical test at the jail to determine his blood alcohol level.
His wife Khloe Kardashian and his lawyer found out about the traffic stop on TMZ. The website claims Lamar’s reality star spouse is not in the loop, and was totally in the dark about his decision to do a stint in rehab.
Khloe gave Odom an ultimatum last weekend to go to treatment or the marriage was over. He left their gated-community and she has remained silent on the subject, except to tweet, “As much as I wish I were made of steel… I’m not. I’m pretty damn close to it though.”
The NBA free agent has a family history of drug problems. His father battled heroin addiction and Lamar has previously voiced concern that he is “fighting my father’s demons.”
In 2001 he was sanctioned for violating NBA drug policies twice in eight months. Two years later he acknowledged, “I just couldn’t control myself in L.A. … the lifestyle that I was living and the things I had access to.”
Last summer Odom entered a rehab facility in San Diego and bailed after 3 weeks.
Amid infidelity rumors, the troubled athlete hit Twitter in mid-July to declare his devotion to Khloe, “Before her there never was and without her will never be. Wifey is real.” He hasn’t tweeted since.
UPDATE: TMZ now claims that Odom has NOT yet entered rehab. Their proof is less than compelling. They now claim, “We’ve been making calls for the last day and just got what we’re told is the definitive word … he’s not there.”
