Comedic actress Lily Tomlin married her partner Jane Wagner in a private ceremony in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve.
“They’re very happy,” said Tomlin’s rep, Jennifer Allen. Veteran columnist Liz Smith, 90, got the exclusive on the nuptials. She wrote, “My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.”
Tomlin, 74, invited writer Wagner to Los Angeles in 1971 to collaborate on the comedy album ‘And That’s The Truth.’ Things progressed from a business relationship to a partnership.
Lily acknowledged that she and her girlfriend of 42 years had no formal coming out. “Everybody in the industry was certainly aware of my sexuality and of Jane…in interviews I always referenced Jane and talked about Jane, but they didn’t write about it.”
She became a major force in comedy in the late 60’s as a stand up comedian and was a featured performer on the popular television variety show ‘Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in,’ with her portrayal of obnoxious telephone operator Ernestine and precocious Edith Ann who was always seated in an over-sized rocking chair and finished every sentence … “And that’s the truth, Pbbt!”
In Tomlin’s latest television series, she co-starred with Reba McEntire in ‘Malibu Country.’ The one-season show premiered in November 2012 and was cancelled in 2013 after 18 episodes.
She continues to appear in a recurring role as Putsy Hodge on Showtime’s improvisational comedy series ‘Web Therapy,’ starring Lisa Kudrow as a therapist who works with patients over the internet.
