Jay Pharaoh’s cold open on NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ mocked a number of issues that befell the President of the United States during his recent trip to South Africa.
In character as Barack Obama, JP stepped to the podium and said, “I’d like to address the controversy at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela. I experienced a series of unfortunate events. I mean, first, I got roped into taking a selfie with the blonde female Danish Prime Minister.”
“Some people said Michelle was angry at me for that… but I talked to her afterwards and I can assure you she was furious.”
“Then I got caught shaking hands with Raul Castro. In my defense, he told me he was Mexican actor Edward James Olmos. And finally, there was a sign language interpreter who clearly had no idea what he was doing. But those were merely distractions and tonight I would like to focus on healthcare.”
Slipping into the shot is ‘SNL’ ensemble comic Kenan Thompson, who began “signing.” He is eventually removed by the Secret Service as ‘SNL’ actress Kate McKinnon joins Obama in the character of Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany.
She grunts with a German accent, “I have und favor to ask. Ze Danish Prime Minister has been bragging all over Northern Europe about her selfie with you. And I vas hoping that I could get one as well.”
POTUS responds, “I don’t think so.” Markel quipped, “Oh really? I feel like you kind of owe me after the whole wire tapping my cell phone thing.”
He rolls his eyes and consents, “OK, but make it quick.”
