Phil Mickelson scored a big victory at Muirfield in Scotland on Sunday, winning the 2013 British Open with a 5-under 66.

The left-handed swinger hoisted the claret jug for the first time – earning his fifth major championship after matching the best round of the tournament.

Mickelson said, “This is such an accomplishment for me. I never knew if I’d be able to develop the game and the shots to play links golf effectively. To play what is arguably the best round of my career, to putt the way I putted, to shoot the round of my life, it just feels amazing to win the claret jug.”

With four groups left on the course, Mickelson pumped his fist and let out a yell as his caddie cried. It was a good day indeed.

At age 43, he is now one step away from a career Grand Slam, with only the illusive U.S. Open left to conquer. Phil has finished in second place a total of six times – with last month’s 2 strokes off the lead finish still fresh in his mind.

He called his June 16, 2013 loss “heartbreaking” and admitted, “This is tough to swallow after coming so close. I felt like this was as good an opportunity I could ask for and to not get it … it hurts.”

Adding insult to injury, the final day of competition landed on his birthday and Father’s Day. We’re guessing his win in Scotland today more than made up for last month’s disappointing second place finish.

The PGA celeb married wife Amy Mickelson in 1996. They have three children: Evan, Amanda and Sophia.
