Colombian singer Shakira is being sued by her ex-fiance Antonio de la Rua for $100 million for services he claims he provided as her manager.
They ended their 11-year relationship in 2010 and De La Rua filed suit in November 2012, claiming the entertainer owes him back pay for scoring a number of lucrative music deals that boosted her career.
According to his lawyer Willaim T. Reid IV, Antonio abandoned his own career as a publicist to become her manager. After trying to quietly compel his former fiancee to give him a settlement, he opted to go forward with a lawsuit.
The entertainer claims she was already a well-established international star long before De La Rua came into the picture. She acknowledges that he did advise her on some business decisions, but he was never officially her manager and there are no documents that say otherwise.
Contained in her legal response to his lawsuit is the only legal document they ever signed — a 2006 agreement drawn up in Columbia stating that in the event of a split, they were each only entitled to their own assets.
The recently installed coach on ‘The Voice’ has been involved since 2010 with Spanish football player Gerard Piqué, center back for FC Barcelona. They met when Piqué appeared in her music video ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),’ the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
They made their relationship official in March 2011 when the singer posted a photo on Twitter and Facebook that she captioned, “I present to you my sunshine.”
She gave birth to their son Milan Piqué Mebarak on January 22, 2013 in Barcelona, Spain, where the family resides.
