Alec Baldwin has decided that a run for New York City mayor is not in the cards, confessing that he has “lost his appetite” for politics. The news came during his weekly radio show in New York on Wednesday.
The 30 Rock actor had previously indicated he was strongly considering mounting a political campaign to replace Michael Bloomberg in 2013.
Many believe that his recent airplane snafu may have been the determining factor. American Airlines booted him from a flight after he refused to turn off an electronic device and he has since taken a considerable amount of heat for the fit of temper, just one of many PR nightmares in recent years.
Baldwin apologized to his fellow airline passengers but stirred the pot almost immediately by making a special SNL appearance to spoof the incident.
With a political career in mind, he actor planned to leave his successful television series at the end of this season. That decision has apparently been reversed.
He rationalized his change of heart to his radio audience, “I’ve got a job now … I’ve got a good job. Give this up for what? I give up money and fame and position and success; I give up this wonderful life I have now in exchange for a chance to ‘really change things?’ … Yeah, I’m not quite sure you can anymore.”
