Fugitive actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi petitioned Canadian authorities for safe haven Friday, sending their attorney out in front of photographers with a note indicating they are “requesting asylum from Hollywood ‘Star Whackers’.”
The Quaids appeared at an immigration hearing in Vancouver on Friday seeking refugee status, alleging eight of their friends have been murdered in recent years and they fear they are next. Their request was granted and they were released from custody on $10,000 bail each and the promise to appear for another hearing on October 28.
The couple claims their lives are at risk citing the “unusual murders” of their friends Heath Ledger, David Carradine, Chris Penn and Natasha Richardson. “Hollywood is murdering it’s movie stars,” Evi Quaid said at the hearing.
During a break in the proceedings, the couple’s lawyer Brian Tsuji read a handwritten statement from the Quaids to the media saying, “Yes we are requesting asylum from Hollywood Star Whackers.” Tsuji declined “to comment further on the mental state of his clients.”
The Quaids are wanted in Santa Barbara, where they missed a court hearing Monday on felony vandalism charges. Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said Friday that the Quaids bail has been increased to $500,000 apiece.
