On a track that resembled a mug bog, Super Saver broke free Saturday to steal the show at the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Calvin Borel won the 136th running, making this his third Derby win in four years. Super Saver covered the 1-1/4 miles in 2:04:45. He paid $18, $8.80 and $6 to win.

Twenty horses went to the post at odds that ranged from 6-1 to 34-1. Ice Box took second and paid $11.20 and $8. Paddy O’Prado came in third and paid $7.40 to show.

Super Saver is trained by Todd Pletcher, giving him his first win in 25 outings in the American classic race for 3-year-old’s. He let out a whoop and slapped his hands together after his colt crossed the finish line.

Owner and breeder is WinStar Farm LLC. The victory is worth more than $1.2 million.
