Finally bowing to public pressure, David Letterman issued a public apology to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and her daughters last night during his Late Show. It has been a week since the talk show host told several jokes that referenced Palin’s fourteen-year-old daughter Willow Palin – see June 9 videos here.
Palin first took her outrage to her Facebook page but followed it up with a Today Show appearance yesterday. Letterman made an earlier attempt to explain away the joke but decided that the time had come to provide a full blown apology.
On Monday night, Dave said, “I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception.” Speaking directly to Palin, he continued: “It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.”
