Robert Venturi is considered among the most influential architects of the twentieth century. He built the Lieb House in 1967. It is best known for the huge number 9 on its front and the sailboat shaped window on one side.
Robert Gotkin and Deborah Sarnoffa, a Long Island, N.Y. couple, purchased the home in early March 2009 for just $1 in order to save it from demolition. They have now shelled out an additional $100,000+ to have it loaded onto a barge and moved from the Jersey Shore to Glen Cove on Long Island.
Venturi has been designing since the 1950’s and his buildings and restoration projects dot the eastern seaboard and beyond. He has taught at Yale School of Architecture and holds many prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Arts, has won the Pritzker Architecture Prize and was elected to the National Academy of Arts and Letters.
The house is expected to reach its final destination by Friday afternoon, when it will be settled onto pilings.
