Kimberly Buffington knew something was wrong on an evening in November as her twins lie in the hospital for routine treatment for a possible staph infection. “I just had this horrible feeling come over me, and I felt like…the babies were passing…I just had this feeling of dread.”
Kimberly Buffington and husband Dennis Quaid went into gruesome detail of the medical mishap that nearly killed their twins on 60 Minutes.
The babies, Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone, were given massive overdoses (10,000 times the normal dose) of the blood thinner, Heparin, which nearly caused them to bleed to death. “There was blood everywhere,” says Quaid.
Dennis and Kimberly sued Baxter, the maker of Heparin, and have set up a foundation to fight the problem of hospital errors, one of the leading causes of death in America.
Until now, the couple has been quiet about their ordeal.
