Chilling images continue to pour out of Iran amidst violent protests against the alleged rigged election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Despite a warning from Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini, to end the demonstrations, thousands of opposition protesters flooded the streets in Tehran.

Police and pro-government militiamen fired live rounds, tear gas and water cannons at demonstrators protesting the disputed election.

A YouTube video of a young Iranian woman as she lay dying in the streets of Tehran after being shot in the chest, has become a symbol of the uprising.

Reportedly shot in the heart by a Basij soldier while protesting on a sidewalk with her father, the young woman, who is being heralded as a martyr, was carrying a sign that said “freedom.”

Her identity unknown, she is referred to on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, blogs and media outlets worldwide as “Neda,” which means “voice” or “call” in the Iranian language Farsi.

“Neda: You are the VOICE of the people. You are a call to FREEDOM…..rip” reads one of many tweets about the slaying.
