Rapper Lil Wayne, 27, entered a plea deal in a New York City courtroom this morning on a charge of felony gun possession. The agreement comes with a one year prison sentence. He was facing up to three-and-a-half years behind bars if he had gone to trial and been convicted.

In July 2007, police pulled over Wayne’s tour bus after a concert and found a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol. DNA evidence linked him to the weapon. His lawyer persuaded him to sign a plea agreement rather than take his chances at the trial that was set to start on January 20, 2010.

Lil Wayne, aka Dwayne M. Carter Jr., remains free on $30,000 bail and must check in with the court again on December 15. His sentencing before Justice Charles H. Solomon is scheduled for February.
