Miss England 2009, Rachel Christie, has given up her crown after being arrested for brawling in the trendy London nightclub Mansion. The 21-year-old athlete and beauty queen reportedly assaulted Sara Beverley Jones, the reigning Miss Manchester.
Rachel punched Miss Manchester in the face several times after Jones showed her a steamy e-mail message that she claimed had been sent to her recently by Christie’s boyfriend, 22-year-old David McIntosh, who happens to be Jones’ ex-boyfriend. McIntosh appears on the Sky1 television series Gladiator as Tornado.
Police arrested Miss Christie on suspicion of assault and later released her on bail. She has been ordered to appear before a court judge in January 2010. A Greater Manchester police spokesman said:
“At about 12:55 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2009, police received a report of an assault at a club on Deansgate Court, Manchester City Centre. It is believed that earlier that night, a 24-year-old woman got into an altercation with another woman in the club and was hit in the face several times. The victim was taken to Hope Hospital where she received treatment for superficial facial injuries.”
The Miss England website had this to say about the situation: “Due to media attention following the allegations against Miss Christie, Rachel has now decided to withdraw from the Miss World competition and relinquish her Miss England crown.”
Christie is training for the heptathlon with her uncle, former Olympic sprint champion Linford Christie. Her goal is to compete in the event at the 2012 Olympics.
She was crowned in July 2009 and recently took possession of a new set of wheels, on loan for the duration of her reign – see video below.
