The top of the Empire State Building is suddenly the hot spot for celebrity photo ops. Former Olympian Cathy Rigby posed in front of the cement and steel-reinforced plexiglass backdrop this morning and not long ago Justin Bieber lined up for a similar series of images.

The big question is …. why? It’s not like we’re being given a fabulous vista to enhance some decidedly high-profile performer. Yet up to the top they all report for the requisite pics taken against a dirty backdrop at the top of the 102-story landmark skyscraper.

Sure the structure is an American cultural icon in New York City and it does brings visitors in droves from around the globe. But lining up an actor or musician to capture a Kodak-type moment is a head shaker.

Recent treks to the top have been undertaken by New Year’s Eve actor Jake T. Austin, actor Ethan Hawke, and Tom Brady baby mama Bridget Moynahan.

Other costumed posers have included Erik the Penguin from Happy Feet Two, Boo Boo and Yogi Bear and a contingent of Smurfs.

We must admit we get the whole King Kong bit … that one gets a two thumbs up.
