Early Friday morning in Atlanta things got out of hand for Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth — resulting in their arrests.

Police pulled Toth over when his silver Ford Fusion was seen weaving in and out of traffic lanes. While the officer was speaking with Jim, Reese said, “Do you know my name?”

The officer responded, “No, I don’t need to know your name.” Witherspoon added, “You’re about to find out who I am…You are going to be on the national news.”

Jim was described in the police report as having droopy eye lids, blood shot and watery eyes and emitting a strong odor of alcohol. He told police that he had one drink, despite the fact that his breathalyzer test registered a reading of .139.

According to the police report written by Trooper First Class J. Pyland, “Mrs. Witherspoon first began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet.”

The Academy award-winning actress sprang from the car and was promptly ordered back inside. The officer claims “she stated that she was a ‘US Citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground.'” Her actions led to an arrest for disorderly conduct.

The couple was taken to an area jail where they were booked and released a short time later. Last night Reese released a statement about the arrests:

“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I am very sorry for my behavior.”
