A decidedly-trimmer Tom Hanks revealed Monday on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ that he has Type 2 diabetes.
The actor did a guest spot to hype his latest film ‘Captain Phillips,’ but the conversation quickly morphed to his dramatic weight loss.
Letterman warmly greeted his old pal, “You look wonderful. You look like you’re a kid.”
Hanks, 57, replied, “I’ve been maintaining the temple. I went to the doctor. She said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you’ve graduated to Type 2 diabetes.'”
When the ‘Late Night’ host expressed alarm, Tom joked, “Something’s going to kill us all, Dave.”
His doctor advised him that he should weigh as much as he weighed in high school in order to attain complete health. That news didn’t sit well with the ‘Forrest Gump’ star.
Tom admits, “I said to her, ‘Well I’m gonna have Type 2 diabetes.’ There was no way I was gonna weigh what I weighed in high school … I was 96 pounds.”
We’ve added a photo from July 2012 for comparison purposes. While Hanks didn’t say exactly how much weight he has dropped, it appears to be a significant amount.
‘Captain Phillips’ hits theaters October 11, 2013. Check out the humorous health-related exchange between Hanks and Letterman on the video clip below:
