Pope Francis has been named TIME magazine’s Person of the Year 2013 … a revelation that will no doubt send Miley Cyrus fans into the depths of depression.
The publication posted their Top 10 contenders and had some fun with the fact that the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer was enjoying an early lead in the polls. In the end — the four runner-ups turned out to be Edward Snowden, Edith Windsor, Bashar Assad and Ted Cruz.
In an article titled ‘Pope Francis, The People’s Pope,’ TIME said, “He took the name of a humble saint and then called for a church of healing. The septuagenarian superstar is poised to transform a place that measures change by the century.”
“From his comments on gays to his penchant for Twitter, Pope Francis’s every move has garnered strong reactions from the world media. In less than a year, he has done something remarkable; he has not changed the words, but he’s changed the music. Tone and temperament matter in a church built on the substance of symbols–bread and wine, body and blood–so it is a mistake to dismiss any Pope’s symbolic choices as gestures empty of the force of law.”
The mag put together of video detailing why they chose Pope Francis. Check it out below:
