There Are More Than 100 New Magazines That Need Readers This Year
Including Hearst’s teeny-boppin’ celebrity-ish not-sure-what-it-is title

May 24th, 2007

One hundred five. That’s the number of new magazines announced this year, says the Magazine Publishers of America. It’s a four percent increase, if you’re interested in that kind of thing. But more interesting is what types of magazines are on the horizon.

We’ll give you a hint: CRAP!

Reports the MPA:

New titles for …
Affluent readers: 22
Sports/Recreation: 12
Kids/Teens: 7
Home/Shelter: 6
African-American Market: 6
Hispanic-Latino Market: 4

The full list of announced launches is here, where you’ll find such gems as Forbes Life Executive Women (”focus on the upscale lifestyle of the career woman”), East of 75 (”new regional magazine focusing on the twenty-five countries that are intersected by Interstate 75 highway in East Tennessee”), Hearst’s 210SA (”lifestyle publication for readers 18-39. It will feature celebrity news, college information, movies, music and coverage of cultural trends”), and Time Inc.’s InStyle spin-off Your Look (”will focus on fashion and beauty. It serves female readers that the magazine’s editors call ‘inspirers’”).

And then there’s our personal favorite, The Fugitive Finder, a title from Suffolk County’s police department to “keep the public informed of local crimes and the most wanted felons.”

Good luck to all 100+ new magazines, whose success rate makes American marriages look like a sure bet.
