We’re heading into the long weekend giddy like a school girl. How come? Because on Tuesday, the much-talked-about Diary of a South Beach Party Girl – from former Wenner Media marketing staffer Gwen Cooper – hits bookstore shelves. Sure, the final copy we sneaked a peak at didn’t have the lurid tales of J. Lo and Chris Paciello that we were jonesing for, but in its place is 300-plus pages of what Vanessa Williams’ show South Beach should’ve looked like.
Published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment (where He’s Just Not That Into You got its start), Diary isn’t feted at its book party till April 17th, so you’ll have plenty of time to read up on Gwen Cooper Rachel Baum’s storied tale from non-profit nobody to South Beach celebrity-cum-New York literary chic.
(In the interest of full disclosure, we consider Gwen a friend.)

The only problem with all of this is Gwen Cooper was never a celebrity in South Beach at any time except in her own mind. She is writing about the way she daydreamed it was, not how it really was. Thats all fine, but most of us, feel she conned S&S into thinking she was some sought after A Lister. She wasn’t. She was short, overweight and when she left town no one noticed–because they never knew she was her in the first place.

I work in publishing and wanted to address ???Alex???s??? point above. I don???t know Cooper and I don???t know much about this book, but the one thing I???m certain of is that nobody at Simon & Schuster bought her manuscript because they thought she was invited to a lot of parties in South Beach. That simply isn???t the kind of consideration that moves an editor to acquire a manuscript. Obviously, if the author is somebody genuinely famous (for instance, if Jennifer Lopez wrote a novel about South Beach), that would become a consideration. But notoriety in South Beach by itself is not something most of us would care about.
Editors acquire manuscripts that they believe can become books the public will buy. This usually grows out of a passionate attachment to the writing and/or the story. If we love a writer???s writing, we will love it whether he or she is short, tall, fat, skinny, beautiful, ugly, or perfectly average looking. Sometimes what we love isn???t what the public loves. This is always disappointing for us. Sometimes, though, what we love is also loved by the public, and that???s what most of us stay in it for. Frankly (and this isn???t just in response to Alex???s point), I can???t imagine a more despicable or ignorant way of attacking a book than by attacking the writer???s physical appearance.
I had no plans to check out Cooper???s book as South Beach isn???t a subject I???m especially interested in. But now I think I will. Any book that gets hate mail before it???s even in stores is probably worth a read.

No Sorry Linda ( I Mean Gwen, who obvioulsy wrote or co-authored both posts) I am Alex Martinez thank you very much. And I have read the book. Someone xeroxed 15 copies and its floating around Miami. Thing is no one can get past page 10 its so boring and meaningless. I mean who the hell cares? You can say whatever you want, but the fact remains the book sucks. Furthermore, there is a story floating around that she (Gwen) stole the title and much of her books content from someone else’s project. So tacky, just like Gwen. I guess the truth will be out soon and then people can make up their own mind. But as far as wasting 15 dollars on this book–dont. Give it to charity instead.

Am I the only one who thinks “Alex Martinez” has a serial killer shrine of Gwen in his bedroom?
If you’re reading this Gwen, go buy yourself a stun gun, girl. I’m serious. This individual seems unbalanced and obsessed with you. Don’t end up as another Kathy Sierra.

Let’s keep in mind that this book IS fiction and the info available on the relationship from Cooper and her novel is pretty vague. I’m not sure what the fuss is all about regarding her separation from Wenner Media, but in the end, the book will speak for itself. I do like the sample chapter enough to check it out. I don’t know how I’ll like the finished product, but it’s not boring and it doesn’t yet appear to suck.
