Let’s be clear: the relationship between Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus was pretty much over weeks ago, long before the latter Twerked up a storm at the MTV Video Music Awards.
So Miley’s racy routine at that event didn’t cause this couple to break up… but it didn’t exactly help matters, either.
"When he saw her performance and the backlash it created, it was the nail in the coffin,” an insider tells Radar Online. “That was all he needed to finally break up with Miley once and for all. He was embarrassed, disgusted and mortified by her performance.”
Of course, this assertion doesn’t jibe with other reports.
According to the outlets that originally confirmed Miley and Liam’s split, the actor’s infidelity was actually to blame for the couple’s demise, with rumors continuing to circulate that he’s in touch with January Jones and that he intimately touched Eiza Gonzalez.
“There was a time that they had a lot in common and enjoyed being together,” the source tells Radar. "But in the last year or so, they grew apart and tried desperately to make it work, but it just didn’t and it won’t.
“This breakup is the best thing for both of them."
