On September 19, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce form Brad Pitt.
This was a stunning enough development on its own.
Millions of people around the world are still trying to come to grips with the dissolution of a marriage they believed would last forever.
But perhaps equally as stunning were the reports that surfaced in the two or three days after Jolie filed for divorce.
There was talk that Jolie ended the relationship due to Pitt's "methods" of parenting.
There was chatter that he cheated on his wife.
There were rumors of Pitt's drinking and drug use, even around the children, along with the one truly scathing report that he physically abused one of the couple's six kids aboard a private airplane.
There does seem to be at least something to that final rumor, considering witnesses saw Pitt acting out of control on a tarmac in Minnesota on the night of September 14.
And considering that the FBI has actually been called in to investigate the alleged incident.
But what was up with all those negative stories about Pitt in the 72 hours since he learned Jolie wanted out of the marriage?
Simple, a source tells Us Weekly: Jolie planted them in the press.
According to this occasionally reliable tabloid, people in Jolie's inner circle “are running a smear campaign” against Pitt.
An anonymous source claims the rumors surrounding Pitt are an attempt to discredit him by Jolie, as she tries to earn sole physical custody of her six kids from a judge.
Pitt has always had a temper, insiders say, the plane incident isn't what actually set Jolie off and prompted this decision.
The magazine alleges she had been planning to leave Pitt for a long time and take the kids (Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne) with her.
“Angie says she is going to destroy him,” claims one Jolie friend. “If something is broken, she just throws it away.”
Do you believe Jolie truly said this? Seems a bit fishy to us.
Over the past 12 months or so, the actress had been “ramping up her efforts in the political world,” adds this Jolie confidant.
She has basically turned her back on Hollywood, even renting out an $8.5 million home in Malibu, where she could remain far away from Pitt.
According to numerous sources, Jolie scarcely gave her husband any notice that she had decided to legally declare their differences “irreconcilable” and seek a divorce.
“Angelina filed the papers a minute before the courts closed," the source tells Us Weekly. "He didn’t have a lawyer or anything. He has been crying constantly.”
Jolie is currently residing in the aforementioned Malibu mansion and has blocked Pitt's number. She's letting famous divorce attorney Laura Wasser do all the work when it comes to ending this relationship once and for all.
As for Pitt?
The tabloid quotes an insider that says he's a "shattered man" at the moment.
That makes us sad.
Let's hope these two work things out. For the sake of their kids if nothing else.
