Sandra Lee has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The celebrity chef opened up about the illness to People, telling the magazine that doctors alerted her to the news during what Lee believed to have been a routine mammogram.
"Life can turn on a dime," Lee says.
Lee has decided to undergo a double mastectomy because she does not want to be subjected to weeks of radiation.
She also "never wants to go through this again."
Remission rates for Lee’s type of cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ, a noninvasive cancer within the milk ducts that can become grow over time if left untreated) are fortunately high.
"My doctor called me a poster girl for mammography," says Lee, who adds that her life’s mission going forward will extend far beyond food:
"I plan to spread the word about early detection."
Other celebrities who have undergone a double mastectomy include Giuliana Rancic, Angelina Jolie, Samantha Harris and Rita Wilson.
