He may have been a relative unknown prior to the 2015 Academy Awards, but Graham Moore ended Sunday night as one of the most talked-about celebrities in Hollywood.
That’s what happens when one is brave enough to tell the world that one attempted suicide at the age of 16.
Upon accepting the trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay, Moore shared this personal tidbit with millions of viewers, telling them that he felt "weird" and "different" as a young man and didn’t think he could go on living as a result.
Because Moore said he felt as if he "did not belong" in society, and because he wrote a movie about a closeted, persecuted homosexual, many have subsequently jumped to the conclusion that the screenwriter is gay.
But he’s not.
"I’m not gay, but I’ve never talked publicly about depression before or any of that, and that was so much of what the movie was about, and it was one of the things that drew me to Alan Turing so much,” Moore told BuzzFeed after the ceremony.
“I think we all feel like weirdos for different reasons. Alan had his share of them and I had my own, and that’s what always moved me so much about his story.”
