Derek Shepherd was forced to look into the mirror on Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 7.
And he didn’t exactly like what he saw.
At the outset of this hour, Derek came to Amelia’s defense after a relate of a patient loudly went off on the sordid details of Amelia’s past. He Derek leapt in and took her the procedure from his sibling.

But Derek wasn’t as vocal in his defense when approached by Owen later on and asked if Amelia was the right person to head up the neuro department.
Wait… did I just make it sound to Owen like I should be in charge, Derek wondered? Umm…. yes, dude. Of course you did! Derek promised his sitter that he would “fix” the situation.
Too late, though, as Owen had already called an emergency board meeting, leading to an incredulous reaction from Meredith (What did you do?!?) and at least leading to Derek stepping up when it mattered.
He took responsibility for not protecting his sister and he told Owen that Amelia should remain where she is.
That evening, Amelia told Derek that she was moving out.
In response, he said that ever since their dad died, he had always wanted to protect her… until she came to Seattle and he saw that she was just fine on her own.
As a result, “I don’t know who I am anymore,” Derek admitted. “I’m miserable. All I do is hurt… the last people I want to hurt.”
And the scariest part? He doesn’t know what to do about it.
Dr. Herman, meanwhile, refused to give Arizona more information about her condition in order to help her decide whether to reveal it to the Board or not.
After her mentor left, Arizona was faced with a surgery she had never performed before. The patient ended up dying, through no fault of Arizona’s, a fact Herman made clear to the family upon her return.
She then vomited. She told Arizona her condition was growing worse. She offered to teach Arizona the one procedure that might have helped save the mother… as long as Arizona kept her secret. Given the chance to save a life, Arizona agreed.
And, hey, Jo also vomited! Prior to her first solo surgery, that is. Fortunately, despite Bailey giving her a hard time, Jo performed brilliantly, as you can see when you watch Grey’s Anatomy online (above).
Also of note:
- Maggie was confused about MerDer missing the dinner to which they invited her, so Meredith took her to hang out at Ellis’ old home, which is now Alex’s place.
- Arizona moved in with Alex.
- April turned to her faith in a time of need.
And it looks like she’ll have to do that again next week, per the teaser for Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Episode 8:
